The Clan McMidgey - Exercising their rite to bite for 20 years!
Angus McMidgey extends a welcome

What are the McMidgeys?

The Highland midge (or 'Culicoides impunctatus')is a species of tiny flying insects found especially in the North West of Scotland. They love damp conditions and favour boggy, grassy areas.

Despite their friendly and curteous disposition Highland midges tend to be very unpopular due to their natural inclination to gather together in large swarms and feast on people's blood. It is a shame that this is so much frowned on... as you read the information on the other pages of this web site oyu will see that they are otherwise very sociable.

Midges tend to be around in large numbers between June and August. If you are planning to seek out and befriend them please be aware that their exact timing will vary from one area to the next (for example the arrive on the Isle of Skye on the 17th of June and stay until the 18th of August (though unconfirmed local stories on the Island tell of times when they would remain untill the 22nd of August due to increased tourist numbers on certain years.
